Miss Maryam Abbas Lawal is one of the many success stories unravelled at the combined 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd convocation of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi held recently.

The 25-year-old Computer Science student who beamed with smiles as she responded to endless congratulatory greetings on the convocation ground graduated with First Class to the joy of her family, friends and well wishers.
With a GPA of 4.93, Maryam who hails from Gombe Local Government Area of Gombe State emerged as the best graduating student of her set. She plans to go for further studies and possibly establish her own firm soonest.
The visibly proud and happy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Saminu Abdulrahman Ibrahim, noted during the convocation, that the combined sets included graduating students for 2011/2012, 2012/2013, 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 sessions. “The total, 7688, is made up of 845 diplomas, 5,554 first degrees, 1219 PGD/Masters and 64 Ph.Ds. Of the 5554 first degrees, 34 obtained First Class, 1203 Second Class Upper, 2702 Second Class Lower, 1481 Third Class while 136 got pass,” he disclosed.
Speaking with Education Review, Lawal  said it was not easy because while she enjoyed the support of her family who believed in her, it was not so with some of her friends and classmates in the university who saw her as a bookworm and disliked her because she hardly socialised.
“That never bothered me. I was focused and determined to come out among the best,” she said. “I have always nursed the dream to make First Class since my secondary school days in Kaduna. When I came to the university, right from my first year, I started praying and working hard for it. I was almost discouraged in my first year because my grades were poor but my brother encouraged me and I started picking up. Some students mocked me that I am a bookworm because I was always reading and hardly had time to socialise on campus. But I am grateful to my family members for their support.”
